Militants Killed During Airstrike, Raids in Southern Afghanistan

By VOA News
03 April 2008

An Afghan security official Thursday said three suspected militants were killed in an airstrike in the country's restive south.

The security official, Amanullah Khan, said the strike occurred late Wednesday, near the city of Kandahar.

In nearby Helmand province, the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan Thursday said its troops killed several armed insurgents and detained four others during a raid on Tuesday.

A statement says the soldiers were looking for a Taliban leader in the area when insurgents fired on them. The coalition forces returned fire, killing "a number" of them.

Helmand has been the site of some of the fiercest fighting between coalition forces and insurgents. It is also the biggest opium producing region in the world.

Last week, a U.S.-based terrorist monitoring organization (SITE) said the Taliban had announced the beginning of a new offensive against coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Last year was the bloodiest in Afghanistan since the Taliban was ousted from power by a U.S.-led invasion in 2001.
