COMAPALA, El Salvador (NNS) -- The Commandant of the U.S Coast Guard, Adm. Thad Allen, visited Sailors at Forward Operating Location (FOL) Comalapa, El Salvador, March 30-31.
Also stopping by was Assistant Commandant, Rear Adm. David Pekoske, the Director of International Affairs, Capt. Charley Diaz and Joint Interagency Task Force South Commander, Rear Adm. Joseph Nimmich.
Allen was in El Salvador on an official visit to meet with the Salvadoran Military Command and to see FOL Comalapa. While there, he also met with U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador, Charles Glazer. Allen toured the FOL and took the time to address the staff and deployed Sailors.
El Salvador is engaged in the war on terrorism with the United States and coalition forces; it is the only Latin American country with troops stationed in a war zone. The United States and El Salvador together serve side by side conducting counter narco-terrorism operations.
"The Sailors really appreciate Adm. Allen taking the time out of his busy schedule to personally thank them for their service to their country," said Cmdr. Charley Groves, FOL's commanding officer.
The commandant made a special effort to meet with his Coast Guardsmen stationed at the FOL and personally thank them for their hard work in helping to stem the flow of illegal narcotics to the United States.
"The commandant was impressed with the Sailors and the facility, and we really appreciated that the commandant took time out of his busy schedule to visit the FOL," said Bruce Jackson, DYNCORP contractor, who is the Coast Guard's logistics liaison stationed at FOL.
FOL provides flight line operations and operational logistics support to aircraft and crews deployed with the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Customs Service and Drug Enforcement Agency and the Canadian Armed Forces who are executing counter-drug operations.
