British ground commanders are to get a new system that will tell them what is happening in the air, help reduce friendly fire incidents and improve ability to counter air attacks, the Ministry of Defense announced Wednesday.
The Land Environment Air Picture Provision (LEAPP) program is being provided under a 100-million-pound (dlrs 200m) contract signed with the US Lockheed Martin's UK INSYS. It is expected to enter service in 2012.
"LEAPP is a new, world-class system that will give our commanders on the ground a detailed picture of activity in the air showing the location of allies in relation to opposing forces," Defense Minister Baroness Taylor said.
"It will improve commanders' ability to plan and strike effectively and help prevent 'friendly-fire' incidents. Battles of the future will benefit significantly from this system," Taylor said.
The system, which can be deployed in different configurations for a variety of military tasks, was said to use ground-based sensors connected to equipment on a vehicle or trailer, with the data collated to produce the air picture.
LEAPP, which augments the utility of current battlefield systems, is planned to replace Britain's Ground/Airmobile Recognized Air Picture capability.
