NEW DELHI (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Donald C. Winter, has wrapped up a tour in India with stops in Mumbai and New Delhi.
Winter's first stop on his three-day trip was India's Western Naval Command in the coastal city of Mumbai. The tour of the base gave Winter a detailed view of India's naval operations, including stops at a shipyard and tour of the naval destroyer, INS Delhi (Delhi class DDG). Winter also met with India's commander-in-chief, Vice Adm. Jagjit Singh Bedi.
Winter said that the two countries have a mutual interest in maritime security.
"It is becoming an increasing challenge in many areas and we will see increasing cooperation between the countries," Winter said. "We will exchange information on what is happening on the seas."
Following his tour of the Western Naval Command, Winter made a trip to New Delhi. While in New Delhi, Winter paid respects to India's military with a wreath laying ceremony at the Amar Jawan Jyoti Remembrance Memorial to honor those who gave their lives in war.
While visiting New Delhi, Winter met with several ranking military and civilian officials including, Chief of Navy, Adm. Sureesh Mehta, Defense Secretary Vijay Singh, Controller Warship Production and Acquisition, Vice Adm. Dilip Deshpande, and an official from the Defense Research and Development Organization.
During a press conference following his meetings, Winter asserted, "There is a natural convergence between U.S. and India. We are two large democracies engaged in world trade, and two large democracies concerned with maritime security."
Winter's final day included a walking tour of the Heritage Site of the Tomb-Garden of Emperor Humayun.
"India has a long and great historical culture," Winter said. "Walking these beautiful gardens and witnessing this spectacular architecture has been a real treat."
