Sri Lankan air force destroys LTTE's airstrip

Sri Lankan rebels, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)'s second airstrip in Mullaithivu district was 'substantially damaged' in two aerial bombings carried out by Sri Lankan air force Monday morning.
According to All India Radio report, disclosing this during a media briefing in Colombo today Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said that the location where bombs were dropped was 'ten kilometers west of Mullaithivu town'.
LTTE has their other airstrip at Iranamaadu in Mullaithivu.
Addressing the same media briefing Defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said that while as security forces are continuing their operations in mannar, Vavuniya and Weli-Oya regions, a large number of Tamil Tigers have been crossing over to Government controlled areas.
A total of 230 LTTE cadres crossed over during the current year of which 161 did so during this month alone, he said.
Rambukwella who is also the Minister for Foreign Employment said that the Government has a comprehensive package to rehabilitate them including offering jobs abroad.
He added that Stage ONE of army recruitment has been completed Monday.
12,175 soldiers were recruited as against the target of 10,000 men during the past three months, the spokesman said.
Brig. Nanayakkara added that 678 Tamil tigers were killed and many others wounded in confrontations with the security forces this year.
The death toll of security personnel were 73 during the same period, he added.
