BILOXI, Miss. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded a $10 million contract on March 4 to Carothers Construction Inc., a large business out of Water Valley, Miss., for a diagnostic imaging center radiology oncology clinic at Keesler Air Force Base (AFB), Biloxi.
"This project is a result of special Hurricane Katrina funding," said Ron Drew, resident engineer in charge of construction, Keesler AFB.
Hurricane Katrina brought significant flooding to the northeast corner of the base destroying most of the radiological equipment, including the MRI and linear accelerators, which were in the hospital's basement.
The new clinic will be located at the southwest corner of the hospital as an addition (connected to the existing hospital) just outside the Women's Services Clinic. The location will allow for easy connection to the hospital, while leaving entry into the ER and nearby Pediatric Clinics unimpeded.
In order to prevent major flooding damage in the future, the building will be built with a finished floor elevation of 24 feet above mean sea level, which is about six feet above the existing basement level floor.
"It is important to provide high-quality spaces that will compare favorably with similar facilities in the public healthcare sector," said Lt. Col. Richard Onken, U.S. Air Force Health Facilities Chief of Design.
The project includes two linear accelerator vaults, a simulator room, exam rooms, physician offices, physicists' work areas and offices and other basic support spaces required for the operation of the clinic.
The facility will be an adequately sized, efficient, modern, hurricane-protected Diagnostic Imaging Center for the Radiation Oncology Clinic to serve eligible personnel in the Biloxi/Gulfport, Miss. area.
The project is expected to be completed by September 2009.
