WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy League's 2008 Sea-Air-Space Exposition, appropriately themed "Global Maritime Security," kicked off March 18, at the Marriot Wardman Park Hotel in Washington.
The exposition provides up-to-the-minute developments on policy and programs of the maritime services and showcases national and international exhibits of the latest in sea power technology.
"We must be able to collaborate and cooperate with industry to get stability and to put in the innovations that will allow us to produce the fleet at least cost," said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, who spoke in the expo's first seminar, "Sea Power and America's Security."
The theme of this year's exposition augments the new national maritime strategy, "A Cooperative Strategy for the 21st Century Seapower," by advancing not only the public knowledge but also informing service members of their role in today's Navy, the future and the critical importance of sea power for America's security and prosperity.
"There are going to be great opportunities for the young men and women who will find the Navy and lead us into the future, and that is the most important dimension of who we are," said Roughead.
Not only does the expo present future opportunities for today's Sailor, but also showcases the technology of the future.
"This exposition gives Sailors the opportunity to see the companies that make the equipment they use, talk with those people and understand the stuff behind it," said Chief Aviations Electronic Technician (SW/AW) William Maynard, an attendee from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.
The exposition will continue until March 20. It is open to all military (active duty, reserve and retirees), U.S. government employees, members of congress and their staffs, representatives of foreign embassies and Navy League members.
The Navy League has hosted the Sea-Air-Space Exposition for over 40 years, and the revenue generated through the expo helps fund Navy League's multiple programs that support the sea services, such as education efforts, and award and recognition programs.
