USS PINCKNEY, At Sea (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91) hosted seven civilian guests March 11 for a day-long embark as part of the Leaders to Sea (LTS) program.

The program, conducted by Commander Naval Surface Forces, provides the means to embark leaders from various business and civic organizations on board ships, where they learn how the Navy operates on a daily basis.

While conducting tours, Pinckney's executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Jon Duffy, familiarized LTS participants with key areas of the ship, including the flight deck, forecastle, combat information center, and engineering plant and introduced them to the many Sailors on board.

"The tour was very informative, and I learned a great deal of what it takes to operate a Navy ship," said LTS participant Chuck Miyahira. "There's nothing like coming to a real ship with all of these Sailors in action and seeing what they do on a normal day."

In addition to touring the ship, guests enjoyed lunch with Pinckney's commanding officer, Cmdr. Dan Brintzinghoffer, in the wardroom, followed by an up-close viewing of a simulated engineering space fire.

"The crew has a lot of pride in what they do everyday, and they were excited to show it off," Brintzinghoffer said. "It's definitely a unique experience for the guests to come out here and see what it is that we actually do."

LTS participant Carisa Azi said the experience gave her a really good understanding of what life aboard a Navy warship is like and magnified her respect for the work Sailors do daily around the world.

"I think it's great the Navy is so generous and gives us the chance to see how the military operates and learn the many different aspects of the Navy," Azzi said. "Just being exposed to all the different areas and seeing how dedicated Sailors are has already taught me so much and gave me an appreciation for what they do."

Pinckney will host three additional days of LTS from March 12-14, including two days in coordination with the Navy Office of Community Outreach.
