BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) -- A USS San Francisco (SSN 711) Sailor returned March 8 from Exercise Key Resolve/Foal Eagle 2008 in the Republic of Korea, where he provided distinguished visitor (DV) support.
Yeoman 3rd Class (SS) Jacob Edwards volunteered for the opportunity to work on board San Francisco to participate in an exercise, marking his first time overseas.
"I heard about this opportunity through my chief," said Edwards. "He went to a planning meeting and they asked if he had a yeoman who would want to go on this exercise. When I got (to the exercise) it was a little bit chaotic, but when the exercise got going it flowed like clock work."
Edwards started his journey Feb. 25, where he endured a 14-hour plane ride to Seoul, South Korea, to participate in the exercise working for Tactical Air Naval Ground Operations Command Post with other service members from the Army and Air Force as well as South Korean forces.
"The command post looked like it was out of a movie, said Edwards. "I have never seen anything like that. It was a very busy central hub, almost hive-like."
Exercise Key Resolve and Foal Eagle are joint/combined exercises, which focus on the strategic, operational, and tactical aspects of general military operations in the Korean theater of operations. They are designed to provide training for U.S. and Republic of Korea forces.
His primary job for the exercise was to coordinate meetings for American and Korean generals and admirals.
"I got a different take on other services and how they conduct business," said Edwards. "I learned that being on a submarine is not that bad. I have a great deal of respect for the other services now. I'll take a coffin rack on a submarine before a tent any day."
