USS MONTEREY, At Sea (NNS) -- The guided missile cruiser, USS Monterey (CG 61), received its second consecutive Battle Efficiency award on Feb. 29, for the crew's performance during calendar year 2007.

The Battle "E" is awarded annually to ships that exhibit superior combat readiness in their classification and for their capability to perform their wartime responsibilities.

Monterey was evaluated on its performance in areas that include: maritime warfare; engineering and survivability; command, control, communications, and information warfare; logistics management; and surface force safety.

"Winning a second consecutive Battle 'E' serves as a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our Sailors," said Capt. Todd W. Bostock, Monterey's commanding officer. "This award is not for a single division or department, but shows the combined effort that everyone on our ship puts into keeping Monterey mission-capable."

As one of only nine Norfolk-based ships to win this prestigious award, Monterey now has the right to paint a stripe on the superstructure, indicating consecutive awards, under the white letter "E." Monterey Sailors are also authorized to wear the Battle "E" ribbon for the remainder of their time in service.
