NORFOLK (NNS) -- The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Mid-Atlantic, awarded a $7,498,902 construction contract, Feb. 28, to Virtexco Corp., Norfolk, for construction of a field medical services school (FMSS) at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune. Work will be performed in Jacksonville, N.C., and is expected to be completed by December 2009.

"The new building will replace structures from the 1950s when the school was recommissioned to train corpsmen in support of combat operations in Korea," said Capt. Efren S. Saenz, commanding officer Field Medical Training Battalion. "In addition to replacing older buildings used as classrooms, this approximately 27,000-square-foot facility will also provide administrative spaces for staff and a learning resource center for computer based training. More importantly, it will include a state-of-the-art combat casualty simulation laboratory, where the latest in mannequin medical technology will be used for exercising the principles of tactical combat casualty care."

The mission of FMSS, renamed as Field Medical Training Battalion in 2007, is to train and prepare medical and religious personnel for service in support of the Marine Forces and all personnel in the combat survival skills necessary to support Marine Forces during military operations.

As an integral part of the NAVFAC enterprise, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic manages the planning, design, and construction of shore facilities for the U.S. Navy from Maine to North Carolina.
