GULFPORT, Miss. (NNS) -- Construction is well underway for the new Naval Construction Training Center (NCTC) Disaster Recover Training (DRT) Facility that is scheduled to open this summer on board Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Gulfport.

"Our current facilities are very old and require a great deal of maintenance," said Construction Electrician Senior Chief (SCW) Alain Jones, NCTC 'A' Company commander. "The new complex will give us state-of-the-art facilities for both classroom and practical training."

The close proximity of all facilities will enable NCTC to train students more efficiently. The new DRT complex includes an administration building, confidence chamber, training tower, and gear storage facility.

"The classrooms are bigger with modern audio-visual equipment," said Jones. "Our throughput has increased over the years and extra space is crucial for additional students and instructors"

The new tower will have major upgrades as the old tower was nearing the end of its life span and the gear storage facility will consolidate material from seven small buildings to one centrally located facility.

"Working closely with the end user, the contractor was able to deliver a mission focused design," said Lt. Craig Clutts, assistant resident officer in charge of construction for Gulfport. "The government and the contractor partnered together well to meet the mission. For example, the contractor agreed to finish the DRT parking lot earlier than scheduled, allowing other projects to begin on time."

The $6.8 million DRT project is part of a larger $75 million package which includes a new Armory, NCTC Training Complex and Auto Vehicle Repair Facility, Tactical Training Facility (TTF), and a Professional Development Center. The contract was awarded Sept. 14, 2006, to Roy Anderson Corporation of Gulfport.
