YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- The forward-deployed anti-submarine warfare (ASW) community convened in Yokosuka on Jan. 28, in the Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 cave for the next in a series of DESRON 15 Anti-Submarine Warfare Syndicate Symposiums.

The symposium, hosted by Commander, DESRON 15, Capt. Mark Montgomery, gave attendees attached to the Research and Development (R&D) team of PEO-IWS Surface Undersea Warfare Combat Systems, Washington, D.C., an opportunity to hear from senior ASW operators who operate and employ the cutting-edge technology installed aboard U.S. 7th Fleet warships.

Additionally, this forum provided senior shipboard operators and leaders a medium to discuss new technology development and testing, existing and proposed tactics, real world tasking, U.S. 7th Fleet operations lessons learned and time to prepare for forthcoming exercises and operations.

Cmdr. John S. Banigan, commanding officer of the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), said the symposium was a premier waterfront forum for the anti-submarine warfare community to come together, share their knowledge, propose new ideas, and work to improve the ASW community as a whole.

"The symposium gives the opportunity for communal knowledge and sheer brainstorming" said Ensign John Tang, McCain's anti-submarine warfare officer. "We had Sailors from all over the waterfront and as far away as Washington, D.C. come together. We were able to share our lessons learned from last year's exercises and operations, so as to prepare for future operations at sea."

Tang said through the symposium participants share knowledge of proven anti-submarine warfare material and operations. This is critical to the continued success of 7th Fleet Sailors as they operate in a highly complex and dynamic environment.

"The forward-deployed naval forces is the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. It's our focus. We're always practicing because those are the threats we face," said Tang. "Since we're facing those threats regularly, this helps keep our proficiency high. The Navy can use this knowledge we have for ships that don't regularly deal with anti-submarine warfare."
