SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Makin Island's (LHD 8) Commanding Officer, Capt. Bob Kopas, met with members of the pre-commissioning crew Feb. 20 to discuss the command's fall 2007 climate assessment survey.

The survey showed above average numbers in trust in the organization, overall equal opportunity climate, organizational commitment, and an environment free from sexual harassment and fraternization.

Conducted twice a year, the survey is designed to measure command climate factors associated with the military equal opportunity program and organizational effectiveness issues. Focus groups were also conducted with crew members where topics such as job satisfaction, command cohesiveness and other related topics were discussed.

"Without Sailors' input, the chain of command would not be fully aware of the challenges Sailors encounter on the deckplates," said Chief Yeoman (AW) Ken Ballard, PCU Makin Island's command managed equal opportunity advisor. "In my opinion, this is one of the most important surveys a Sailor will take in their naval career."

During discussions with crew members, Kopas shared his thoughts on information drawn from a combination of the survey and focus groups, and he spoke of how it was important that junior Sailors, who drive the work in the command, have an opportunity to share their opinions. Kopas followed discussions with a question and answer session.

"I have never taken part in the survey, but the importance was made very clear: That you need to be a part of the solution," said Electronics Technician Seaman Jamie Lara. "This has a major impact on my experience since Makin Island is my first command."

Following commissioning, PCU Makin Island is scheduled to be homeported in San Diego.
