USS PELELIU, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Peleliu (LHA 5) left Naval Base San Diego Feb. 20 to complete a two-week underway period, after completing a three-month planned maintenance availability.

While underway Sailors and Marines will be busy conducting engineering tests, combat systems training, and damage control training.

"It has been a while since we have been out [to sea]," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Fuels) 2nd Class (AW/SW) Eduardo Ople. "The exercises help prepare the ship and personnel for the upcoming deployment."

Aside from the exercises taking place aboard, many Sailors will use their time for enhancing their careers.

"The Sailors should stay focused, positive, and take advantage of these two weeks by working on their qualifications and rate training," said Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 1st Class (AW/SW) Maria C. License.

The Sailors and Marines aboard the "Iron Nickel" will also complete a routine ammunition onload in preparation for a deployment later this year.

"We are making sure that the ammunition makes it down to the magazines safely during the onload," said Damage Controlman Fireman Jeremy Rogers, who stood fire watch during the complex evolution.

Flight operations will also be accomplished using AV-8B Harriers, and CH-53E Sea Stallions during the transit.

License said, "The Harrier [Squadron] actually volunteered to come on this underway to get experience and get ahead [on training] for the upcoming deployment."

A three-day port visit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is also scheduled for this underway period, where the ship will host distinguished visitors, Mexican military, and tourists.
