NORTH ISLAND, Calif. (NNS) -- The first MH-60R weapons load trainer (WLT) was delivered to the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) North Island, Feb. 19.

The WLT's arrival follows the introduction of the latest platform of H-60 helicopters, the Romeo, and will provide Sailors with practical training and hands-on experience.

"The trainer is important, because there isn't one in the fleet right now," said Tim Frantzen, program manager for H-60 maintenance and training devices. "This will prepare airmen before going to the fleet."

The MH-60R WLT is similar to the shell of the MH-60R helicopter and enables students to practice loading ammunition with imitation missiles called weapons training shapes.

"When students get to their squadrons, they can hit the deck running," said Chief Aviation Ordnanceman (AW) Chuck Holzwarth, H-60 instructor. "They will already know what to do."

The instructors at CNATTU met with contractors designing the WLT to offer users' perspectives.

"Three of our instructors went to the factory," said Chief Warrant Officer Clifton Joiner, H-60 learning site officer. "They tested it to make sure it worked how we wanted it to."

Joiner said one key feature of the trainer is the ability for instructors to input faults for students to troubleshoot.

Two other WLTs are scheduled to arrive at training facilities in Jacksonville and Mayport, Fla., later this year.
