VCNO, Principal Deputy ASN Visit at NAVSUP Headquarters

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (NNS) -- Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) Adm. Patrick M. Walsh and Principal Deputy, Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development & Acquisition) Vice Adm. David Architzel visited Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Headquarters Feb. 13.

Rear Adm. Alan S. Thompson, NAVSUP Commander and Chief of Supply Corps hosted the visit, which included an in-depth briefing on NAVSUP's support to the Warfare Enterprises and Provider organizations and NAVSUP's ongoing efforts to drive efficiencies and reduce logistics support costs.

"We are closely linked with our Navy stakeholders," Thompson emphasized. "Our performance remains strong as we continue to transform the way we do business."

While providing an overview of NAVSUP's objectives, Thompson explained the support and alignment of NAVSUP's assistant commanders, who are NAVSUP's senior representatives to each warfare enterprise, and the executive committee, a senior NAVSUP leadership committee that monitors business performance and oversees implementation of NAVSUP's Commander's Guidance for 2008. The guidance addresses the challenge of meeting NAVSUP's requirements today while implementing fundamental changes in the future.

NAVSUP provided details of its day-to-day operations, along with the basic elements of NAVSUP's 26 products and services and how they combine to fit into three basic product lines: Navy Working Capital Fund Supply Chain Management, Services, and Navywide programs.

The VCNO was also briefed on NAVSUP's Navy Enterprise Resource Planning implementation, slated for its first installation in October 2008, and how it is a key component to supply system efficiencies. It included information on warehousing services, integrated supply chain management, contracting services, leveraging commercial best practices and people.

Before leaving, Walsh invited NAVSUP personnel who have recently returned from individual augmentee (IA) assignments to share with him their thoughts and feedback about their experiences. He also asked for their suggestions on how Navy leadership can better support Sailors returning from IA assignments and their families. Each IA had a chance to share personal stories and discuss their own unique experiences.

"It really means a lot to know that Navy leadership is fully engaged in ensuring our families have support structures in place while we're deployed, as well as addressing the IA-unique post deployment adjustment issues," said Cmdr. Chris Parker of NAVSUP Headquarters' Contracting Directorate. Parker was assigned to Third U.S. Army Contracting Directorate at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, from July 2006 to February 2007.

"This was a great brief to get to know NAVSUP," Walsh said. "I have every confidence in the Naval Supply Systems Command and them fulfilling their mission for the Navy."

"This meeting gave us the opportunity to share our successes and some of the challenges we face. It's vital for our Navy leadership to know where we are now, where we're headed, and how we plan to get there," Thompson added.

NAVSUP's primary mission is to provide U.S. naval forces with quality supplies and services. With headquarters in Mechanicsburg and employing a worldwide workforce of more than 25,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP oversees logistics programs in the areas of supply operations, conventional ordnance, contracting, resale, fuel, transportation, and security assistance.

In addition, NAVSUP is responsible for quality of life issues for our naval forces, including food service, postal services, Navy Exchanges, and movement of household goods.
