SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Navy officers and civilian analysts met at Independence Auditorium on Naval Base San Diego, Feb. 8, to discuss and coordinate training exercises during an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) conference hosted by Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21, Capt. Mike Salvato.
The conference was the second in a series initiated and led by commander, Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 11, Capt. Chip Jaenichen. Leaders from the Navy's aviation, submarine and surface forces discussed methods of making unit-level training more effective to improve the proficiency of the Navy's ASW capable ships and aircraft.
"One purpose is to provide information on exercises, search out more opportunities for training time and to talk about ASW," said Lt. Kevin Smith, strike group operations, SUBRON 11.
Jaenichen said that San Diego as a fleet concentration area is perfect for holding this type of conference. As a result, the name of the conference will change to the ASW Warfighter's Symposium. They hope to hold it quarterly, hosted by different commands in the future.
"It's a waterfront initiative between working guys," said Salvato. "It's all about scheduling with a limited number of assets as efficiently as possible."
The conference has expanded since it was first held in November 2007, to include helicopter squadrons and Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command representatives.
