Thales expands British Army UK fleet

12 February 2008

The BGTI system has already been installed on almost 600 Warrior and Scimitar vehicles and gives troops the ability to see, locate and engage targets during the day and night and at far longer ranges than ever before. Currently, 146 Scimitars are fitted with BGTI.

Comprising a stabilised Gunners Sighting System, a Commanders Crew Station, a GPS and Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) and a Drivers Display, the BGTI system significantly enhances the fighting effectiveness of the Scimitar to detect and engage targets. The thermal imager gives much improved situational awareness at night and in poor visibility, while the eye-safe laser rangefinder, fire control system and INS provide own position and target location at extended range with increased accuracy and robustness.

BGTI has received outstanding approval from both vehicle crews and senior British Army officials during recent and current deployed operations.

Alex Cresswell, Managing Director of Thales UK's land and joint systems business, says: "This contract award again underlines Thales' tradition of providing innovative and affordable technology to the British Army. Feedback from crews in theatre shows that BGTI is really making a substantial difference in what is undoubtedly a difficult and extremely dangerous operational environment."
