USS DUBUQUE, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Dubuque (LPD 8), the "Mighty 8," earned her engineering operational certification Jan. 25 after achieving an above average score as assessed by an Afloat Training Group (ATG), Pacific, inspection team.
During the Total Ship System Engineering assessment, Dubuque's engineering department completed certification in only 11 underway training days, saving 10 steaming days and more than 200,000 gallons of fuel.
The ATG inspectors were impressed by the attitude of the Dubuque's engineering crew and stated in their after action report that "the engineering department was well prepared within such a short period of preparation time, and the watch standers' motivation and enthusiasm was outstanding."
The Sailors put in numerous hours completing black and white smoke, loss of lube oil pressure, and loss of condenser vacuum drills.
ATG's report went on to say that the crew's "intensity and professionalism was flawless as they coordinated and executed all drills and evolutions."
The Mighty 8's engineering training team was assessed as effective in self assessment and proficiency training with a score of 100 percent in evolutions and 100 percent in drills. Overall, the cumulative score for the entire engineering department was 86.66 percent.
"Their performance, pride and professionalism have clearly earned the engineers of the Mighty 8 the title of 'best steam ship and LPD (amphibious landing platform dock) on the waterfront," said Dubuque's Commanding Officer, Capt. Bruce Lindsey. "I am a very lucky (commanding officer) to have such superb Sailors!"
Dubuque, which is homeported in San Diego, is currently preparing for a routine deployment later this year as part of the Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Group.
