NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- The recycling facility on board Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB), New Orleans, reached a significant milestone Jan. 24, marking the processing of more than 300,000 pounds of recyclable material.

"The chain of command has been a valuable asset in educating people about the importance of recycling," said Marion Fannaly, environmental program director. "The command's support in providing the manpower to make this work has been the key to our success."

The recycling center is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the installation's environmental department. All manpower is provided by the base.

All of the service members assigned are excited to know they make a difference in their environment and the world.

"It is gratifying to go to work and know you are helping the environment by eliminating waste," said Aviation Electrician 2nd Class Geoffrey Campo, a processing technician at the recycling facility. "Not only are we helping the earth but we help out our own military family with the money received."

More than $16,000 has been raised with proceeds from the sale of the material being channeled back to the program for maintenance costs and the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program. The money MWR receives from the sale of the material is then invested back into the special projects on station.
