NORFOLK (NNS) -- Commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 held a change of command ceremony at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Norfolk, Jan. 25.
Capt. James Paulsen relieved Capt. Mark E. Wralstad who will be retiring after 26 years of distinguished service.
Wralstad successfully led CVW-1 on its 2006 combat deployment, a seven-month turnaround cycle and then its 2007 combat deployment to the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean and Western Pacific Ocean. During those two deployments CVW-1 flew more than 52,000 flight hours and 1,783 combat sorties in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
Wralstad received his commission in May 1982 after attending the U.S. Naval Academy. He was designated a naval flight officer in 1983. His previous tours include two command tours at NAS Oceana. He has also completed staff tours at Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe, Belgium and on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon, Washington. He has accumulated more than 3,200 flight hours and 700 arrested landings in the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet.
Paulsen most recently served as deputy commander, CVW 1. A 1983 graduate of Purdue University, he was commissioned at Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla., and received his Wings of Gold in September 1985.
Paulsen has flown over 4,600 flight hours, including more than 2,700 hours in the FA-18 Hornet and Super Hornet. He has 946 carrier-arrested landings on the decks of nine aircraft carriers.
