NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- Crew members aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) "Gold Eagle" welcomed Vice Adm. David Architzel, the principal deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, for a tour of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, Jan. 25, in Newport News.
Architzel came to Carl Vinson to review the progress of the ship's refueling complex overhaul (RCOH), and visit with Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier.
While touring "Gold Eagle" spaces, Architzel spoke with crew members about the importance of their work while in the shipyard, and commended them for their efforts in preparing Carl Vinson for its eventual return to sea.
"The shipyard can be a very trying environment for Sailors, but Carl Vinson's crew has set the standard for how to conduct an RCOH," said Architzel.
Later in the tour, Architzel reviewed the progress of the ship's galley facility and spoke with Sailors assigned to Carl Vinson's fire watch division.
"All of your hard work is helping this ship remain on time and at budget during this RCOH," said Architzel.
While touring engineering spaces, Architzel addressed a damage control training class in session about the importance of being ready to return to sea.
"Damage control training day-in and day-out may seem monotonous, but it is crucial to the survival of the ship," said Architzel. "Continue to work hard and take your training seriously. This is not a commercial ship; it's a warship, and you all are key to its success."
Carl Vinson is currently undergoing its scheduled RCOH at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.
