COMALAPA, El Salvador (NNS) -- Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, the U.S military's highest ranking officer, visited with Sailors stationed at Forward Operating Location (FOL) Comalapa, Jan. 18.

Mullen was in the country for an official visit with his counterpart, Salvadoran Chief of Defense Gen. Eduardo Mendoza. El Salvador was his last stop of a multi-country Latin American trip. Mullen also took time out to visit with the U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Charles Glazer.

El Salvador is engaged in the global war on terrorism with the United States and coalition forces, it is the only Latin American country with troops stationed in a war zone. El Salvador is also involved in the counter narco-terrorism operations in the region.

Cmdr. Charley Groves, FOL commanding officer, greeted Mullen as he arrived at FOL Comalapa. The chairman took time to meet with and personally thank the Sailors for their hard work in helping to stem the flow of illegal narcotics to the U.S. The chairman followed his address by shaking every Sailor's hand and presenting them with one of his personal Joint Chiefs of Staff coins.

Groves said, "The chairman was impressed with the Sailors and the facility, and we really appreciated the Chairman took time out of his busy schedule to visit the FOL."

FOL provides flight line operations and operational logistics support to aircraft and crews deployed with the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Customs Service and Drug Enforcement Agency and the Canadian Armed Forces who are executing counter-drug operations.
