One British soldier has been killed and five others injured in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in London announced Monday.
The fatality is the first suffered by UK troops deployed in Afghanistan this year. The total number killed since the overthrow of the Taleban regime is 87, including 41 killed last year and 39 in 2006.
The MoD said that the latest victims were killed and injured when their vehicle was hit by a mine 3km (1.8 miles) northeast of Musa Qala.
One soldier was pronounced dead at the scene, while the five others were evacuated by helicopter to the International Security Assistance Force medical facility at Camp Bastion and Kandahar airfield.
The troops were reported to be disrupting enemy forces and reassuring local Afghans when they were hit. The MoD said attacks and roadside bombings against foreign soldiers are frequent.
