New Russian envoy to NATO to arrive in Brussels in late January

RIA Novosti

18/01/2008 16:27 BRUSSELS, January 18 (RIA Novosti) - The recently-appointed Russian ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, will arrive at the organization's HQ in Brussels on January 28, a source in Russia's mission to NATO said on Friday.

"He is expected to arrive on January 28," the source said, adding that Rogozin's predecessor, Konstantin Totsky, was scheduled to depart for Moscow on January 25.

After being appointed to the post by President Putin on January 10, Rogozin, 44, an outspoken nationalist ex-lawmaker, warned the 26-nation alliance against discriminating against others in order to ensure its own security.

"They [NATO countries] should understand that no one's security can be ensured to the detriment of others' safety," Rogozin told the Rossiiskaya Gazeta government daily.

The envoy also said he would be faced with political, not diplomatic, tasks in his work, singling out as priorities the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty, Kosovo, Iran and Afghanistan.

Regarding other issues, the official also said he was planning to cooperate with a number of Russian ministries and departments in his work. He said the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism would involve close cooperation with the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service.

Rogozin, a former chairman of the lower house committee for foreign affairs, was earlier considered a pro-Kremlin politician and held the post of presidential envoy to the Kaliningrad Region, a Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania.

He also formerly led the nationalist bloc Rodina (Motherland).
