SANTA RITA, Guam (NNS) -- USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Houston (SSN 713) both from commander, Submarine Squadron (CSS) 15 on U.S. Naval Base Guam were named as winners in the Battle Efficiency "E" competition within the submarine force, Jan. 1.
The announcement of the winners was presented in a message by commander Submarine Force, and commander Submarine Force, Pacific Fleet.
The Battle "E" is awarded annually to ships who sustain superior performance and maximum conditions of combat readiness for their class for the previous year.
"The two commands excelled to win the awards by demonstrating the ability to operate above standards in different categories of different shipwide examinations such as tactical readiness examinations, and operational reactor safeguards exams," said Capt. Phillip Sawyer of CSS 15.
In order for the commands to be awarded the Battle "E" throughout the year they had to exceed above that of their peers in their class.
The commands had to excel in four areas in order to receive the award. These areas included maritime warfare, engineering/survivability, command and control and logistics management.
"They have proven to maintain professionalism, system knowledge and cleanliness along with preservation throughout the year," said Sawyer. "These ships have proven to be the best and are well deserving of these awards."
Sawyer will be presenting the awards in the near future to the crews of Frank Cable and Houston.
Currently Houston is underway performing operational commitments.
