SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- A change of command ceremony was held for Commander, Strike Force Training Pacific (CSFTP) on board USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Jan. 11.
Rear Adm. David L. Philman relieved Rear Adm. Gerald R. Beaman as CSFTP, 3rd Fleet's agent for training. CSFTP is responsible for preparing U.S. Pacific Fleet's carrier and expeditionary strike groups for both routine and surge forward-deployed operations to 5th and 7th Fleets.
Beaman, completing his 19 month tour, described in his remarks his tenure as a tremendously gratifying tour in which, CSFTP completed seven successive exercises in as many months. In his farewell message, he thanked his Sailors.
"I have had the good fortune to have led the very best and brightest that this nation and our Navy in particular has to offer," said Beaman. "Our Navy has always attracted the talented sons and daughters of America with an opportunity to grow and to develop and to achieve their dreams. Nowhere is this more prevalent than here at Strike Force Training Pacific."
Beaman was awarded the Legion of Merit during the ceremony, presented by Vice Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet. Beaman heads to Naples, Italy, where he will serve as deputy assistant chief of staff for Allied Joint Force Command in Naples.
An F/A-18 Hornet pilot, Philman has completed ten major deployments at sea on USS Constellation (CV 64), USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), USS Enterprise (CVN 65), USS Independence (CV 62), USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).
