NORFOLK (NNS) -- Capt. Ladd Wheeler relieved Capt. J. R. Haley as commanding officer of the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) during a change-of-command ceremony held aboard the ship Jan. 11.
Those on hand for the occasion included Commander, Naval Network Warfare Command, Vice Adm. H. Denby Starling, II; commander, Carrier Strike Group 2, Rear Adm. Frank Craig Pandolfe; retired Rear Adm. Wick Parcells, who was Theodore Roosevelt's first commanding officer from 1984-1987; and Tweed Roosevelt, great-grandson of the ship's namesake.
During the ceremony, Haley told the crew what a great job they have done, and how honored he was to have been their commanding officer.
"I will miss so many things about this ship but most importantly I will miss you guys," Haley said to the crew. "Whenever I would have a bad day I would just walk around the ship and in less than five minutes, a Sailor or group of Sailors would fix me by simply asking how I was doing and making me feel as though I belong."
Haley remarked that the job of being the commanding officer of Theodore Roosevelt was the pinnacle of his career.
"All my shipmates are what I will miss most and remember forever," Haley said. "Thank you all for everything you have done. Thank you for making me look good by bringing me with you as you have made Theodore Roosevelt the finest combat team in the fleet."
Haley then proceeded to read his new orders and relinquish command to Wheeler, who followed by reading his orders to assume the role as Theodore Roosevelt's 11th commanding officer.
"[Capt. Haley], as clearly noted you have led from your heart and with excellence," Wheeler said. "Theodore Roosevelt is indeed in awesome shape. I can assure you that I will take great care of your crew and ensure this ship is the first one called upon to protect this great nation."
Haley's next assignment is as the deputy chief of staff to Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Timothy J. Keating, at U.S. Pacific Command in Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.
Wheeler comes to Theodore Roosevelt following a tour as chief of staff for Commander Naval Air Forces Atlantic.
