SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5, based in Port Hueneme, Calif., arrived at Fleet Activities Sasebo on Dec. 6, for a six-month deployment where they will support base operational readiness by performing facility upgrades and installation projects.
With much of the base enjoying a holiday stand down, the visiting Seabees have spent the past month starting various construction projects on base and are happy with the reception they have received from the Sasebo community.
"After arriving in Sasebo during the holiday season, I have found this to be one of the most supportive commands I have ever been a part of," said the detachment's officer-in-charge, Lt. Jared Jasinski. "Everybody has offered to help us out in every step of our transition. We have been set up for success."
A few projects already in progress from the previously deployed detachment battalion, NMCB 7, have been picked up by NMCB 5 to ensure turnover of all ongoing jobs maintain a seamless transition.
"There are 24 of us detached to Sasebo, all with the objective of maintaining the big picture of operational readiness here," said project supervisor, Steelworker 1st (SCW) Class Joshua Prescott. "Everything so far is going off without a hitch."
Current projects include the construction of two concrete-shrouded security/force protection guard shacks, a drainage ditch installation to promote run off water removal and an indoor firearms training facility for Sasebo's security force.
The dedication and hard work associated with each project provides a rewarding experience for the crew.
"Working in a detachment has been a great way for us to come get on-the-job training and experience Japanese culture," said Engineering Aide 3rd Class Jeremy Davis. "Everybody is happy to be here building facilities for the Sailors who will use them in the future."
After completing the first month of their six-month stay in Sasebo, the Seabees will continue to advance construction projects on base, repair damages and offer contingency engineering and humanitarian assistance if needed.
