Middle East to remain 'violent' for 4,000 years - Israeli general

The outgoing commander of the Israeli Army HQ is dismissive of the effects of any Middle East peace deal, insisting that there will always be violent conflict in the region.

"This has been a violent arena for the past 4,000 years and will stay that way for the next 4,000, regardless of any agreements attained here," Major General Benny Gantz said.

His warning comes amid Israel's continuing belligerent defiance to abide by the most basic behavior of an occupying power under the Geneva Conventions, maintaining a military stranglehold around Gaza and building more and more illegal settlement in the West Bank.

In an interview with Jane's Defence Weekly, the Israeli top brass insisted that he was leaving behind a capable army of winning a war in Syria and in Gaza despite its latest disastrous invasion of Lebanon in 2006.

After 33 days of fighting, the IDF sent four leading divisions into Lebanon but were only able to advance 4 kilometers without even reducing Hizbullah's ability to retaliate.

The general is taking up the post as Tel Aviv's military attache in Washington ending two turbulent years in command.

Jane's reported that there were many Israeli senior commanders, who were "hesitant about launching a major operation in Gaza, not only because of the expected high casualty rate but also due to concerns that a decisive outcome cannot be realized."
