MND-North Military Police battalions transfer authority (Tikrit)

Multi-National Division – North PAO

TIKRIT, Iraq – In a ceremony held Dec. 10, the 97th Military Police Battalion cased their colors and transferred authority to the 728th Military Police Battalion.

“It truly has been an honor to lead and serve with this battalion during an important time in history. We have accomplished so much to be proud of. We have made the IPs (Iraqi Police) a much stronger, larger force,” said Lt. Col. Michael Apodaca, 97th MP Bn. commander.

The 97th MPs have a long and distinguished history dating back to their constitution on June 8, 1945. They have served in the European Theater during WWII, Vietnam, Cambodia and most recently deployed to Tikrit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The key accomplishments of the battalion during their deployment include supporting more than 60 named brigade combat team and battalion task force operations throughout the MND-N area of operations.

The Police Transition teams conducted more than 4,500 joint patrols with the Iraqi Police. On those patrols, they were able to locate 54 improvised explosive devices, six unexploded ordnance rounds, two vehicle-borne IEDs, two house-borne IEDs and discovered 14 weapons caches.

The 728th MP Bn. plans to carry on where the 97th left off, by assisting in educating the Iraqi Police in all operations.

“We will continue to help Iraqis with their security by continuing to help train IPs. This is an important time in Iraq’s history and we are proud to be part of it,” said Lt. Col. Brian Bisacre, 728th commander.
