SEAL Team 7 Holds Change of Command

CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- Cmdr. Gary J. Richard relieved Cmdr. Todd L. Tinsley as Commanding Officer of Sea Air Land (SEAL) Team 7 during a ceremony at Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, Dec. 11.

During the ceremony, Tinsley remarked on the significant accomplishments and contributions SEAL Team 7 has made in the global war on terrorism during his tenure as commanding officer.

"The men and women standing before your took the fight to the enemy," said Tinsley. "They delivered devastating effects against the enemy as the worked alongside the Iraqi Police and Army soldiers they expertly trained to fight the insurgency."

Tinsley assumed command of SEAL Team 7 from Cmdr. Todd G. Veazie in December 2005.

Tinsley, a Mitchell, Neb. native, enlisted in the United States Navy in November 1982 and graduated from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training with Class 126 in February 1984. He was commissioned in 1989.

His next duty assignment is at the National Counter-Terrorism Center in Washington, DC.

Richard assumes command after serving as Director of Operations for Naval Special Warfare Group 1.

A native of Boston, Mass., Richard graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and commissioned in 1989.

SEAL Team 7 recently returned from a six-month deployment in Iraq and the Pacific theater in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and the global war on terrorism. Their actions helped increase security and stability in the Al Anbar province of Iraq and their contributions were significant in degrading the capability of terrorist organizations in Iraq and around the world.

SEAL Team 7 was commissioned March 2002 and is a subordinate command of Naval Special Warfare Group 1. Since its commissioning, SEAL Team 7 has made three combat deployments to both the Central and Pacific Command theatres of operation in support of the global war on terrorism.
