Sri Lanka-LTTE-Clashes
At least 13 Tamil Tigers and a soldier have been killed in a series of clashes in Sri Lanka's embattled northern region, officials in Colombo said Saturday.
Six LTTE rebels were killed in a confrontation with security forces in Mahamalai in Jaffna peninsula on Saturday, Indian national TV news portal reported here quoting officials of the Media Centre for Sri Lanka National Security (MCNS).
The incident came a day after a soldier was killed and another injured in a clash in the same area, they said.
The LTTE also suffered heavy losses in Wanni and other areas in the north in their continued bids to breach the defence lines, the MCNS said.
Troops engaged in pre-emptive strikes at LTTE positions in Vavuniya on Friday, killing six rebels while destroying a bunker.
Meanwhile, ground troops said an LTTE cadre was killed at Nagarkovil in northern Jaffna while attempting to breach the defence lines on Friday, according to the MCNS.
Troops also said that 15 anti-personnel mines were recovered during a day-long search operation in Vilathilkulam, Vavuniya, on Friday.
Separately, troops conducting a search operation jointly with police in the Mutur area of Trincomalee arrested five suspected LTTE rebels, the MCNS said.
