MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) 44 Det. 10 (HSL 44 Det. 10) returned home Nov. 27 from a five-month deployment to the Eastern Pacific Ocean on board USS Halyburton (FFG-40).

Tasking from Joint Interagency Task Force South had the ship's company, aircrew and detachment maintainers continually flexing to meet operational demands.

Detachment Officer in Charge, Lt. Cmdr. Adam Plowcha, praised the contributions of the detachment maintainers.

"Enough can't be said about the maintainers. These guys handled all the chaotic situations that arose as complete professionals doing what it takes to get the job done," said Plowcha.

The deployment devoted 300 flight hours to over 80 operational sorties. The highlights of the missions included chasing a speed boat that led to the prevention of over three tons of cocaine from reaching American shores and the detainment of four suspected drug traffickers.

Also during the deployment, the demolition of an abandoned fishing vessel that once held over six tons of cocaine afforded the detachment enlisted aircrew the opportunity to demonstrate their accuracy when firing the SH-60B's crew served weapons. The Det. 10 pilots and air crew especially enjoyed flying in support of the two unannounced night boarding that were successfully completed by the ship's crew and the U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment.

The deployment's success can be directly attributed to the seamless cooperation between HSL-44 Det. 10 personnel and the Halyburton crew. The ship/air team was responsible for keeping approximately 5.1 metric tons of narcotics from reaching the streets of American cities.
