Sri Lanka-LTTE-Clashes
At least 18 Tamil Tigers and four civilians have been killed in clashes with security forces in the embattled northern Sri Lanka, the army said in Colombo on Monday.
Three Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants have been killed in two separate battles that took place at Wanni defences on Monday morning, PTI reported here quoting Sri Lankan Media Center for National Security.
In the first incident, security personnel launched an attack targeting a group of LTTE rebels trying to breach the defences in Nawathkulam in Northern Vavuniya district.
At least two rebels were killed in the gun battle while the rest managed to flee, it said quoting defence sources.
Separately, in a pre-emptive attack launched in North of Nawathkulam this morning, an LTTE militant was killed, ground troops said.
Meanwhile, the Pro-LTTE 'Tamilini' website claimed that a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed when its Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) confronted the LTTE in Kaddaiyadampan in Mannar on Sunday.
Two T56 assault rifles were also seized by the tigers during the incident, it said.
