MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Adm. James Stavridis toured USS Boone (FFG 28) on Nov. 11 to greet the crew and wish them luck prior to their deployment to the SOUTHCOM area of focus.

Stavridis spent time with Boone's Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Newman J. Evans III discussing the coming deployment and their mission of counter illicit trafficking. Stavridis also visited several spaces on board, speaking to each Sailor he met.

"The mission you'll be doing is incredibly important," said Stavridis. "Each year, smugglers bring hundreds of tons of drugs to our country. It's up to you to stop them."

Stavridis praised the Sailors on their hard work and admired the various spaces including Boone's new navigation simulator.

"This visit is very important to the crew," said Evans. "It's great to have Adm. Stavridis on board since we'll be in the SOUTHCOM area for our deployment."

Boone, homeported in Mayport, will deploy to Latin America this winter to conduct counter illicit trafficking operations in the Caribbean and engage in theater security cooperation events to promote interaction and maritime security in the region.
