NORFOLK (NNS) -- Capt. Dee L. Mewbourne assumed command of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (Ike) (CVN 69) Nov. 16 during a change-of-command ceremony held in the aircraft carrier's hangar bay.

Mewbourne relieved Capt. J. D. Cloyd. Cloyd has been in command of the Eisenhower since Sept. 1, 2005.

Mighty Ike returned home in May after a regularly scheduled deployment to the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Under Cloyd's command, the ship celebrated its 30th anniversary of commissioning on Oct. 18.

Mewbourne's command assignments include VAQ-139 and the USS Nashville (LPD 13).

He has also served as the Military Assistant to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense and as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense's Senior Military Assistant in the aftermath of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Mewbourne will be Ike's 14th commanding officer.
