BOSTON (NNS) -- Crew members aboard USS Sampson (DDG 102) made final preparations Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 in anticipation for the ship's commissioning ceremony on Nov. 3 at Massport's Black Falcon Terminal in historic Boston Harbor.

Chiefs and petty officers alike instructed and delegated various tasks to their Sailors to be completed throughout the days leading up to the commissioning.

Sailors could be seen throughout the two days, swabbing decks, wiping down bulkheads, painting the ship's interior and exterior and performing basic general maintenance so that Sampson's presence would be spotless.

"I don't think people realize how much work goes into doing something like this," said Cryptologic Technician Technical 3rd Class Nina K. Bartholomew, a crew member serving aboard the Sampson.

Bartholomew added that she will be glad when the commissioning is over so that she and the rest of the crew can get focused on the missions that await this highly capable warship and her well-trained crew.

Sampson, the newest Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer, which was built at the Bath Iron Works in Maine, is the first ship in five years to be commissioned in Boston.

"I chose the Sampson based on where it was built and the local community here in Boston," said Boston native and Sampson engine department auxiliary officer Ensign Courtney Lavasseur. "This is a great city, and Sampson is a great ship."
