SUBIC BAY, Republic of the Philippines (NNS) -- Nearly 150 Sailors assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) lent a helping hand to two local area schools Oct. 30 during a port visit to Subic Bay.
Sailors visited Iram and Barretto-1 schools to take part in community relations projects and friendship building activities with the students.
"I love interacting with the children here in the Philippines," said Lt. Michelle Lewis. "The kids are just so energetic; they have so many questions for you and you can share a little bit about yourself and learn so much about them."
While at the schools, Essex Sailors passed out gifts and played games with the children. They also helped clean and paint the schoolhouses and fences. As a token of friendship, Essex Sailors donated and constructed a basketball hoop at the Barretto-1 Elementary School.
"This is the main reason why I joined the Navy - to help people," said Interior Communications Electrician Fireman Amanda Tecson. "This was my first [community relations] event and it was everything I hoped it would be."
The day started with a presentation by the students that included singing and dancing, showcasing their culture.
The visit also gave students an opportunity to practice the English they learn in school. Both children and Sailors alike shared each other's culture through conversation and interaction.
Essex' Commanding Officer Capt. Brian Donegan noted, "[Community relations] events like these are very important because they generate positive interaction between Sailors and the local community," he said. "I'm extremely pleased that Essex Sailors were able to make a meaningful difference for so many children here in the Philippines."
