SUBIC BAY, Philippines (NNS) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) arrived in Subic Bay, Philippines, Oct. 29 for a scheduled port visit.
While in port, the ship's crew members will have a chance to participate in cultural exchanges and goodwill generating activities.
Sailors will also take part in two community relations projects, working with two local elementary schools.
"It's an honor for us to make our first port call of the fall patrol in Subic Bay, a city rich in history, culture and tradition," said Capt. Brian Donegan, Essex commanding officer. "While in the Philippines, we are going to back-load the remaining elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Additionally, our Sailors and Marines are going to have the opportunity to participate in some community relations projects that will allow us to give something back to the local residents in exchange for their hospitality and friendliness."
During the port visit, which comes at the conclusion of exercise Talon Vision and an amphibious landing exercise, Essex will onload part of the 31st MEU.
Elements of the 31st MEU will embark Essex as part of the Essex Expeditionary Strike Group (ESX ESG) to take part in the strike group's annual fall patrol in East and Southeast Asia.
The 31st MEU consists of ground, command, air and combat support elements that allow ESX ESG to conduct amphibious operations from the sea and project power ashore.
"The people of Subic Bay are exceptional hosts," said Donegan. "We look forward to their friendship and are looking forward to this port call."
Essex last visited Subic Bay in Nov. 2006 while patrolling the Western Pacific Ocean during its fall deployment.
"This is my first visit to the Philippines and my first port visit since getting to the Essex," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) Airman Apprentice Chad Dornbusch. "I've heard all kinds of stories about how wonderful the people are and I am excited to see what kind of shopping I can do and sample some of the food."
