SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS McClusky (FFG 41) returned to San Diego Oct. 22 after completing a six-month deployment as part of the Joint Interagency Task Force, South and U.S. Naval Forces, Southern Command.

McClusky conducted counternarcotics operations in the eastern Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea and U.S. Southern Command area of operations with Coast Guard Law Enforcement Dets. 101, 103 and 107 and embarked helicopter det., Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light Squadron 45.

"We were sent down for a counternarcotics mission; we spent a lot of time working with our regional allies and strengthening ties with the navies in the Southern Hemisphere," said Cmdr. Daniel W. Bryan, McClusky's commanding officer.

McClusky's crew captured or disrupted the trafficking of more than 5 metric tons of cocaine. These patrols helped to generate support and awareness of the Navy's efforts to ensure a safe and secure maritime environment among partner nations in Central and South America.

"We were able to take drugs off the streets, as well as guys who were trying to take them to the United States," Bryan added.
