US Airstrike North of Baghdad Kills 11, Including Civilians
By VOA News

The U.S. military says 11 people, including civilians, were killed in a U.S. air strike north of Baghdad Tuesday.
Military spokeswoman Major Peggy Kageleiry said an American helicopter fired at a group of men planting roadside bombs. She said the suspects ran into a nearby house and the helicopter continued to fire at them.
She said six civilians and five "military-aged men" were killed. The spokeswoman said five people who were wounded were evacuated to a hospital in nearby Tikrit.
The military expressed regret for the civilian deaths, but said the insurgents endangered civilians by running into the house. Residents say 14 people, including women and children, were killed in the attack.
The spokeswoman said the military is investigating.
The U.S. military is also investigating an air strike earlier this month, October 11, that killed nine children and six women. That attack came during an operation against senior leaders of the al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist group in the Lake Thar Thar area northwest of Baghdad.
In other news, the military said one terrorist was killed and 10 suspects detained in operations over the past days targeting terrorist networks in central and northern Iraq. Separately, it said three suspects were detained during operations today targeting a car-bombing network in the Iraqi capital.
Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
