MINA SALMAN PIER, Bahrain (NNS) -- Naval officers from Pakistan and Germany visited USS Miami (SSN 755) on Oct. 21.
Pakistan Navy Cmdr. Junaid Bahadur and Lt. Cmdr. Amir Mehmood along with German Navy Cmdr. Friedrich von Kalm joined Miami’s Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Rich Bryant, for a tour aboard the nuclear-powered submarine.
The visit gave the officers a chance to see how a U.S. Navy submarine operates.
“This is the first time I’ve boarded a U.S. submarine,” said Bahadur. “It really gives those of us in the coalition an opportunity to see how they work and to ask questions.”
Bryant said spending time with the coalition officers reminds him how Miami and its crew contribute to a larger mission.
“It’s all about cooperation,” said Bryant. “... it helps for the coalition to see how one of the best ships in the fleet operates.”
Bryant presented the officers with a command coin to commemorate their visit to the submarine.
Miami is currently on a regularly scheduled deployment as part of the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group conducting maritime security operations (MSO).
MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment and complements the counter-terrorism and security efforts in regional nations’ littoral waters. Coalition forces also conduct MSO under international maritime conventions to ensure security and safety in international waters so commercial shipping and fishing can occur safely in the region.
