India-Northeast-Rebels Surrender
Indian security forces achieved yet another milestone on Tuesday in their endeavor to bringing peace to the Northeastern state of Assam by motivating 33 terrorists including two women cadres of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and two cadres of Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KNLF) to surrender.
In a first of its kind in the recent times, a joint surrender was organized by the Army and State Police Department in the presence of Lt Gen BS Jaswal, GOC Gajraj Corps, Shri RN Mathur, DGP Assam and Maj Gen Gyan Bhushan, GOC Red Horn Division at Tamulpur, Baksa District.
Army and Police dignitaries were also present.
The event is a hallmark of the synergy which exists between the various security forces and civil administration operating in Assam, said an official release issued here today.
The ultras were led by Nagen Rabha, alias Karna Das, self-styled second lieutenant, and Bhavesh Patigiri, alias, Pratap Patigiri, self-styled Sergeant major, all belonging to the 709 'battalion' of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) which is active in lower Assam.
They deposited 19 assorted weapons, including one AK 47, one AK 56, a muzzle loaded gun, one pistol, ten revolvers, five grenades, five AK ammunition, 195 rounds of pistol ammunition, two detonators and ten explosives.
Speaking on the occasion, Jaswal lauded the decision of the ultras to shun the path of violence and join the mainstream.
He also complimented the kin of the terrorists for motivating their near ones to surrender.
The army officer, who also inaugurated a 'Rehabilitation Training Center', said the surrendered ultras will be rehabilitated and taught various professions so that they can earn their livelihood.
The ULFA's 709 'battalion' was involved in the kidnapping of former Food Corporation of India (FCI)'s Northeast chief P C Ram, who was subsequently killed in a cross-fire between the ULFA and police.
This is the fourth surrender in the area in the past eight months with nearly 47 ultras laying down arms last month itself.
