3 soldiers, 24 Tamil Tigers killed in fierce clashes in Sri Lanka

At least 24 Tamil Tigers and a soldier were killed in fierce clashes between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels and army troops in restive northern Sri Lanka Monday, where the guerrillas also shot dead two policemen.
The battle broke out near a defence line in Mullikulam in Vavuniya district this evening, according to a statement by the media center for national security, Indian national TV news portal reported here today.
"Intercepted LTTE communication revealed that around 20 LTTE terrorists have been killed and 15 wounded in the confrontation," it said.
"However, ground troops confirmed that around 30 LTTE cadres were killed," the statement said adding, one soldier also died in the clash while seven sustained injuries.
Troops have recovered seven bodies of LTTE cadres, six T-56 weapons and one multi-purpose machine gun from the area.
Earlier, four LTTE cadres who attempted to breach the security forces' forward defence line (FDL) in Muhamalai in Jaffna, lost their lives when army troops opened fire at them, the Defence Ministry said.
The remaining militants retreated with the bodies of the slain rebels, the army said adding, troops recovered two T-56 weapons, one modified silencer weapon, seven T-56 magazines and two wire cutters from the area.
In other parts of northern Sri Lanka, LTTE rebels killed two police constables and injured two others in separate incidents today, the army said.
Elsewhere, two police personnel suffered injuries when two woman LTTE rebels opened fire at them at Bandarikulama in Vavuniya Monday evening.
