USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) -- A helicopter attached to the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group and USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) assisted an Iranian-flagged dhow in the Central Persian Gulf Oct. 9.

While operating over international waters, the helicopter was flagged down by the dhow’s crew and in return reported the distressed vessel to nearby Arleigh Burke.

Arleigh Burke responded to the dhow’s distress call and assisted with communicating the dhow’s troubles to the Maritime Emergency Mutual Aid Center, which notified the Iranian Coast Guard to provide further assistance. Arleigh Burke also provided the dhow’s crew with fresh water while awaiting the arrival of the Iranian Coast Guard.

Coalition forces have a long-standing tradition of helping mariners in distress by providing medical assistance, engineering assistance and search and rescue efforts.

In support of this effort, Coalition forces routine conduct Interaction Patrols, which are an element of Maritime Security Operations (MSO) aimed to help generate support and awareness amongst commercial vessels sailing in the region of the Coalition’s efforts to ensure a safe and secure maritime environment. Coalition forces also conduct MSO under international maritime conventions to ensure security and safety in international waters so that commercial shipping and fishing can occur safely in the region.
