India has expressed its disappointment over the postponement of elections in Nepal.

Responding to a question on the latest development in the Himalyan country, the External Affairs Ministry spokesman said here Friday that repeated postponement of elections erodes credibility and affects the process of democratic transformation and legitimization.

He expressed hope that the special session of the Interim Parliament will address all relevant issues democratically to enable the people who have sacrificed so much to choose at the earliest their own future and the manner of their governance, through a free and fair election process.

Nepal's Election Commission has cancelled the Constituent Assembly polls following the governments request to put on hold the election process. The rescheduled polls were to be held on 22nd of November this year.

The government Friday sent a letter to the Commission saying the poll process has to be stayed as the Maoists have given a notice for convening the House apparently to discuss the complete proportionate representation system and abolition of monarchy through
parliamentary resolution.

Earlier, a marathon meeting of the seven parties leaders including the Prime Minister, Girija Prasad Koirala and the Maoists chief Thursday failed to break the deadlock over the Maoists demands of complete proportionate representation system of the polls and declaring the nation as republic through a parliament decree ahead of the crucial polls.

However, three political parties in the alliance including the Communist Party of Nepal(UML) which was the second largest party in the parliament in the previous polls have given the note of dissent to the decision.
