Secretary of Defense Visits Sailors in Comalapa, El Salvador

COMALAPA, El Salvador (NNS) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates greeted Sailors at the U.S. Navy’s Forward Operating Location (FOL) located in Comalapa, Oct. 2.

The Secretary was in El Salvador to visit Salvadoran President Tony Saca during his five-nation visit to Latin America. Gates was in country discussing issues with Saca, one of which was to thank him for his dedicated involvement in committing troops to Iraq.

El Salvador is helping to fight the global war on terrorism with the United States and coalition forces as the only Latin American country with troops stationed in a war zone. Saca has also teamed up with the United States on the Counter Narco-Terrorism battle in this region.

Gates met with deployed Sailors stationed in El Salvador and was shown around the base by Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Charles Groves.

Groves said, “Secretary Gates thanked the Sailors for their hard work and dedication in this area of responsibility and [said] that he was impressed with the accomplishments they have achieved.”

The FOL provides flight line operations and operational logistics support to aircraft and crews deployed with the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Customs Service, and Drug Enforcement Agency, which are conducting counter-drug operations along with partner nations in the region.
