SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- San Diego Sailors from Beachmaster Unit 1’s Beach Party Team Delta returned home to family and loved ones Sept. 25, following a six-month deployment to South America as participants in Partnership of the Americas/UNITAS 2007 and Project Handclasp.

The team left San Diego in March embarked aboard USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) under the direction of commander, Destroyer Squadron 40.

The mission of Beach Party Team Delta was to provide communications liaison between the ship and the forces ashore, coordinate all landing craft movement, support the movement of equipment and materials across the beach and coordinate the re-embarkation of forces back to the ship.

While operating with U.S., Chilean and Peruvian marines, the team off-loaded Marine vehicles and several tons supplies at Cinfucho, Chile and Ancon, Peru. Beach Party Team Delta Sailors were able to interact with the Chilean and Peruvian marines, working side-by-side and successfully completing three integrated beach landings.

Beach Party Team Delta Sailors were also able to support Project Handclasp during several community relations projects in Chile, Peru, Panama, El Salvador and Honduras. The team, along with Sailors from Pearl Harbor provided medical supplies, toys and bicycles to several orphanages throughout Latin America. The team made significant repairs to two schools and three orphanages.

Beach Party Team Delta is one of five Beach Party Teams assigned to Beachmaster Unit 1 at the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.
